Across
the Universe (2007)
Starring Jim Sturgess, Evan Rachel Wood & Joe
Anderson
In this film, a love story is told through the music of the Beatles.
The time frame spans the entire '60s and a good job is done with
the era. The film's originality is very refreshing. |
American
Graffiti (1973)
Starring Ronnie Howard, Cindy Williams & Richard
Dreyfuss
The trailer for American Graffiti asks, "Where were you in
1962?" This nostalgia-filled film revolves around two things that
intermingle: recently graduated high schoolers who are pondering their
futures, and cruisers looking for girls to share their bench seats with.
It's a wonderful film all the way around-- acting, writing, directing (by
George Lucas), sets, and of course-- the amazingly awesome cars! |

Blast
From the Past (1999)
Starring Brendan Fraser, Christopher Walken, Alicia
Silverstone & Sissy Spacek
Blast From the Past is a funny flick about a paranoid
scientist (Christopher Walken) who builds a massive fallout
shelter in 1961 to protect his family from imagined dangers.
The shelter is essentially an underground home that has
enough supplies and resources to last the family thirty
or so years. Since their son (Brendan Fraser) was born
in the shelter, he's never known the outside world. So
thirty plus years into the future, he ventures out into
the "real" world. Their home was a time-capsule,
only encompassing the world up to 1961. |
A
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Starring Heath Ledger & Jake Gyllenhaal
As
far as depicting the '60s-era goes, Brokeback Mountain
doesn't rate up high, because the cast is outfitted in
(obviously)
mostly western wear throughout the film. |
A
Bronx Tale (1993)
Starring Robert De Niro & Chazz Palminteri
Robert De Niro directed and starred in this film. It takes place in 1960,
and in my opinion, a fantastic job was done to capture that time and place.
This one is a serious drama, and quite a fine movie. |
Calendar
Girl (1993)
Starring Jason Priestley, Gabriel Olds & Jerry
O'Connell
The basic plot of Calendar Girl is about three die-hard fans
of Marilyn Monroe whose greatest wish is to go on a date with her. It takes
place in 1962. The sets, clothes, etc. are absolutely perfect. There are
dozens and dozens of cars featured as well. It also includes snippets from
some of Marilyn's films. The only reason it didn't get five ratings is
because of the original filler music, which was so '90s! |
Catch
Me If You Can ( 2002)
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks & Christopher
Walken
I saw this film in the theatre, and it was really good. There is a lot
to see and everything looks great. It takes place throughout the decade
and the clothing, hair, sets are wonderful. However, according to the IMDb,
there are lots of anachronisms. |
Dirty
Dancing (1987)
Starring Jennifer Grey & Patrick Swayze
This movie is supposed to take place during the summer of 1963, but other
than a few cars, a couple of meager hairstyles, and maybe about five outfits
total, nothing is even close! Jennifer Grey's hairstyle got to me the most--
and her clothes, especially when they are rehearsing. And those new songs
mixed in-- a real let-down! No doubt about it-- they needed to do better
to make this era shine. |
Down
With Love (2003)
Starring Renée Zellweger & Ewan McGregor
Down With Love is a fun romance with an awesome atmosphere. It takes
place in 1962. Everything is so colourful and wonderful! The sets and fashions
are so delightful as is the music. Great! |
Dreamgirls (2006)
Starring Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles & Eddie
Murphy
I enjoyed this musical, and I feel the eras were depicted well.
The cast and sets look great in this entertaining feature. |
Earth
Angel (1991)
Starring Cindy Williams, Cathy Podewell, Mark Hamill & Rainbow
Harvest
One of my favourites as a child. This is a made-for-TV-movie that I actually
haven't seen it in a few years, but remember the storyline perfectly. Most
of it takes place in the "modern" era (circa 1990), but the story
revolves around '56 Bel-Air which was belonged to a doomed 1962 teenage
girl, who comes back to guide its new owner. I certainly got a lot of enjoyment
out of it when I was little. |
Forrest
Gump (1994)
Starring Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Penn & Gary
Sinise
Forrest Gump is a modern classic. The film spans over three decades
and every one of them is portrayed wonderfully. The sets and fashion and
everything is really perfect. |
Grease
2 (1982)
Starring Maxwell Caulfield & Michelle Pfeiffer
Grease 2 takes place in 1961 at Rydell High. This movie is beyond cheesy,
and I didn't enjoy it. Michelle Pfeiffer's character, and most all the
other females, are dressed and coiffed so '80s it's ridiculous. There were
serious problems in wardrobe and hair for the girls! Oddly enough however,
the guys looked perfectly fine, which is the only reason why the film received
one rating! There are appearances by original Grease-rs Frenchy,
Principal McGee, Blanche and Coach Calhoun. |
Hair (1979)

Hairspray (1988)
Starring Ricki Lake & Divine
My absolute favourite film as a child, Hairspray (directed by
John Waters) tells the tale of an unlikely idol (Ricki Lake) who makes
her way to the top of a Baltimore dance show in 1962. Filled with great
songs, clothes, dances and just about everything! Wonderful; a must see! |

The
Locusts (1997)
Starring Vince Vaughn, Kate Capshaw & Jeremy
Davies
This film takes place in a small Kansas town in about 1960. A big focus
is on the characters themselves, instead of their surroundings, so no bonus
points there. Good acting and a nice drama. |
Mermaids (1990)
Starring Cher, Bob Hoskins & Winona Ryder

American Graffiti (1979)
Starring Ron Howard, Cindy Williams & Paul Le
Mat
This film didn't capture the magic of the first American Graffiti.
It takes place in the late '60s and Vietnam's impact on the original cast
(all of which are still here-- even Harrison Ford in a cop cameo!). This
one didn't do anything for me. |
National
Lampoon's Animal House (1978)
Starring John Belushi & Tim Matheson
Animal House is the perennial college/teen comedy.
It's absolutely hilarious, particularly the antics of
the legendary and unforgettable John Belushi. Dozens
of films have been "inspired" by Animal
House over the years, but of course, there's nothing
like the original. The film is set in 1962, but there
are countless anachronisms, which explains why the film
got a low rating. |
The
Outsiders (1983)

Peggy
Sue Got Married (1986)
Starring Kathleen Turner & Nicolas Cage
The perfect "turn back time" film. Kathleen Turner's character
faints at her high school reunion only to find herself back in high school
in 1960. A great script and very enjoyable film. A super job was
done getting the look of the time right. One of my top picks; I just love
this film. |

Strike!
(AKA All I Wanna Do) (1998)
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Gaby Hoffmann & Lynn Redgrave
This film does a great job at recreating the '60s. It takes
place at an all-girls school and the era in all its glory is
well-showcased. |
Telling
Lies in America (1997)
Starring Brad Renfro, Kevin Bacon & Calista Flockhart
Brad Renfro stars as Karchy, a teen in 1960 who admires local dee-jay Billy
Magic (Kevin Bacon), a too cool, cocky guy who drives a beautiful red '59
Cadillac convertible (which luckily gets its fair share of screen time).
Karchy has a tendency to stretch the truth and make himself out to be better
and more experienced than he is. Billy Magic comes under the scrutiny of
the Payola scandals that rocked real life Alan Freed right out of his dee-jay
booth. A good job is done making the film take place in '60. All in all,
it's a very watchable and enjoyable film. And "dat's da truf," as
Karchy would say. |
